"How long will it record?" is the single most common question we get, and the honest answer is that it depends on two separate limits: how long the battery lasts, and how much audio the storage holds. Whichever runs out first ends the recording.
Storage is straightforward math once you know the bit rate.
Bit rate is how much data the recorder spends per second of audio. Higher bit rate means better fidelity and bigger files. A 32GB recorder running at 512 kbps holds roughly 156 hours of audio. Drop to 128 kbps and the same device holds several times that, at noticeably lower quality.
For voice, the useful range is 128 kbps to 512 kbps. Below that, distant or quiet speech becomes hard to make out. Above it, you are burning storage on detail that speech does not need.
A recorder that only wakes up for sound lasts dramatically longer.
In continuous mode, the device records silence just as expensively as speech. Voice activation (often labeled VOR or VOX) keeps the recorder idle until it detects sound above a threshold, then starts a new file. In a room that is quiet most of the day, this is the difference between a recorder that dies overnight and one that runs for a week or more on a charge.
